Refining the lip on a large coil built vessel
Most of my work is thrown on the wheel, integrating traditional Japanese and Korean coil and hand building techniques to help achieve larger forms. My process is highly experimental, embracing subtle changes in firing technique and materials to achieve dramatically differing results. While my shapes may be familiar, the volatility of my raku process – combining live fire with the use of compounded metals such as cobalt, copper, lithium, and iron in my glazes ensures that no two pieces are the same.
My work explores the relationship between the natural elements - earth, air, fire, and water - and seeks to find balance among them through subtle adjustments to glaze formulation, temperature and exposure to live flame, oxygen and water. The varying relationship of these elements brings to life each unique piece, and the result is a collection of classic ceramic vessels infused with a contemporary edge.
